A competition to find the most creative use of malt in home cooking competition was organised by the Suffolk East Federation of the Women’s Institute, sponsored by Muntons, the Stowmarket based malt and malted ingredients manufacturer. At a presentation ceremony held at Muntons headquarters in Stowmarket the winners and runners up were presented with their prizes.
The winner was Rosemary Digby who collected the top prize, a cream, retro styled, SMEG food mixer. Her winning entry was a delicious rhubarb, coconut and malt cake, which in the opinion of the judges, was an exceptional cake with an incredible blend of complimentary flavours.
Polly Sinclair was awarded the runner’s up prize for her very creative malt glazed beer-can chicken. She was awarded a hamper containing an assortment of malted ingredients, Muntons merchandise and finished products made with malt including chocolate, beer and whisky.
Second runner up was Olive Godbold who submitted a classic recipe for baked apples with malt-soaked fruit filling and a malt glaze in the creative malt competition. She was presented with a case containing a selection of Muntons ingredients merchandise and malted finished products.
Richard Platt, Muntons Applications and New Product Development Technologist, presented the prizes on behalf of Muntons to the winners, who also received a signed certificate to commemorate their achievement. He commented: “Gill Denny and Jane Sago based in Ipswich spent two days preparing all 22 of the recipes ready for tasting in itself no easy task and praise must go to their dedication and commitment.” He continued: “Judging proved to be far more difficult than we anticipated, as all of the recipes were exceptional – how do you compare a chicken dish to a piece of cake? But we were up for the task and we all agreed that the winning cake was just delightful and really surprising.”
The winning cake along with a booklet containing all 22 malt based recipes will be on sale at the WI stand at the Suffolk show.
