| Muntons Malt has a dedicated team of qualified grain buyers annually purchasing over 265,000 tonnes of quality malting barley and wheat.
Each of our malting sites has its own particular requirements however they all specify that barley and wheat for malting must achieve at least 98% germination. Click on the icons to find out more about the purchasing requirements of each of our sites
All of our Grain Managers are DEFRA licensed crop inspectors, and along with our intake teams, attend regular courses designed to keep them updated with developments in barley breeding and identification.
1. Cedars Maltings, Stowmarket, Suffolk
Grain for malting
88,000 tonnes of grain for malting are purchased each year for this maltings. Barley is the main cereal purchased although we do have a small requirement for wheat. Sourced through both grain merchants and direct from the farm, the specifications for the barley can alter depending on the season and the requirements of our customers. Currently we are looking to purchase a total of 50,000 tonnes of winter barley - Pearl, Fanfare, Gleam and Maris Otter with nitrogens ideally less than 1.65% and good grain size. The balance of our requirement is for spring barleys - Optic and Barke - with nitrogens around the 1.75% mark, again with good grain size. For the 2004 crop we also have requirement for small quantities of both Cellar and Cocktail.
Other grain requirements
In addition to the grain we purchase for malting we also buy approximately 15,000 tonnes of barley for non-malt processing. There is no minimum germination requirement for this grain.

2. Flamborough Maltings Bridlington & Full Sutton store, East Yorkshire
Our Yorkshire procurement operations annually source around 120,000 tonnes of malting barley. This is for delivery to either our maltings at Bridlington or our stores at Full Sutton near York. Preferred varieties are Pearl and Fanfare from the winter crop and Optic and Cellar from the spring crops with Cocktail in small quantities for evaluation trials from the 2004 crop. Nitrogen levels need to be below 1.70% with good grain size.
